TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – If you could spend one day giving back to a local charity, what would you do? Give money. Volunteer. Share your talents. Your chance to make an impact is coming on #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and celebrate generosity worldwide. Scheduled on Tuesday, November 28, #GivingTuesday is held annually after Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kick-off the holiday giving season.

In Tallahassee approximately 300 nonprofit organizations are part of the Big Bend Gives Back coalition to promote #GivingTuesday. Today they kicked off a campaign and contest to inspire the community to give back in impactful ways to the local charities and causes they support. Volunteers, business leaders, elected officials, and more than 40 nonprofit agency leaders attended the event at Kleman Plaza to laud the positive outcomes attributed to giving and volunteerism.

"Big Bend nonprofits are doing amazing work and #GivingTuesday is our chance to give back,” said Jessica Lowe Minor, Executive Director of the Institute for Nonprofit Innovation and Excellence (INIE). “Not only does it feel great to give, but by volunteering or donating to a local charity on November 28th, you can literally help make this community a better place.”

“As Florida’s lead agency for volunteerism and service, Volunteer Florida is thrilled to partner with nonprofits to promote giving – in the Big Bend and in communities across the state,” said Chester W. Spellman, Volunteer Florida Chief Executive Officer. “Whether it’s on #GivingTuesday or any time throughout the year, Volunteer Florida encourages citizens in the area to volunteer in their communities, invite their friends and families to join them, or provide financial support to their favorite local charities to help our state meet critical needs."

The local economic impact is also significant, explained INIE Board Chair Alyce Lee Stansbury, President of Stansbury Consulting.
“With more than $3.1 billion in annual revenue, nonprofits in Leon and the surrounding counties are not only the ‘quality of life’ sector, they are vital contributors to the economy,” she said. “A gift on #GivingTuesday will change lives and strengthen Tallahassee and the Big Bend.”

The Tallahassee Democrat is sponsoring a community-wide #Unselfie contest to create social media buzz about #BigBendGivesBack. An #Unselfie is a selfless image that focuses on a charity or cause, not the individual. To enter the contest, people should take a photo holding a sign featuring #UnselfieBigBend and the name of a local nonprofit. Posting the photo on Instagram and and generating the most votes for the image will help the nonprofit win a $500 grant from the Community Foundation of North Florida and a direct mail package from Target Print and Mail.

“The Tallahassee Democrat and are proud to partner with Big Bend Gives Back to help promote and recognize local nonprofits,” said Leslie Smith, marketing and communications manager at The Tallahassee Democrat. “Showcasing all of the creative and heartwarming “unselfies” is something we are delighted to share on for all to see.  We hope to continue this partnership and help make this community the wonderful and supportive place that it is for everyone.”

The #BigBendGivesBack organizing committee includes representatives from the Big Bend Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the Community Foundation of North Florida, the Council on Culture and Arts, the Institute for Nonprofit Innovation and Excellence, United Partners for Human Services and the United Way of the Big Bend.
